The Short Answer

Metabo HPT (formerly Hitachi) is a DIFFERENT brand from German 'Metabo' and their batteries do not interchange. Within Metabo HPT, 18V and MultiVolt (36V/18V) slide packs share the 18V tool interface.

Despite the shared word, Metabo HPT (North American, ex-Hitachi) and Metabo (German, part of the same global group but separate tool/battery line) are not cross-compatible. Inside Metabo HPT, MultiVolt packs auto-switch and run both 18V and 36V MultiVolt tools.
